Bulldogs Sweep Day One at North Alabama Tournament

FLORENCE, Ala. - The Samford softball team started play today at the North Alabama Tournament against Detroit and Louisiana Monroe. The Bulldogs dominated the Titans 10-3 and followed it up with a 1-0 pitchers duel win against the Warhawks. The 2-0 day moves the Bulldogs record to 15-7 on the season.

GAME ONE: Samford - 10 | Detroit - 3

The Bulldogs opened the day against the Titans as they play five games in three days. The Samford bats were hot against Detroit pitching as they scored a run in the top of the first inning as Joi Hubbard led off with a single and was brought around to score later on an Olivia Shaw RBI ground out. The Bulldogs gave the ball to Karley Fuller for her fifth start of the season. She was solid in her three innings of work, allowing two runs and striking out two Titan batters.

The game was tied 2-2 after three innings as Shaw homered to left field before the Bulldogs blew the game open with rallies in the fourth and fifth innings. Two runs scored on a Hubbard single before she was plated on a Sarah Squillace single. The following inning, Logan Champion hit a three-run blast to move the Samford lead to 8-2.

Olivia Treece game in relief after Fuller's three innings of work. The freshman struggled with her command at times with four free passes but allowed just one hit in her 3.1 innings and allowed just one run to earn the victory and move to 2-0 on the season.

The final touches on the victory came when Champion left the park for the second time of the game in the seventh inning. She now leads with a team-high six homers on the season to complete the 10-3 victory.
Samford outhit the Titans 8-7 in the game led by Champion's two hits, both homers and a game-high five RBIs and three runs. Hubbard set the table at the top of the lineup for the Dogs with two hits and two runs as Samford scored double-digit runs for the fifth time this season.

GAME TWO: Samford - 1 | ULM - 0

Samford returned to play immediately as they rolled straight into a game against the Warhawks after defeating Detroit. The Bulldogs offense was the key in game one of the day but against a stronger Warhawk team, a pitcher's duel broke out. For the Dogs, Jordyn Partain was dominant as she threw a complete game two-hitter to move to 6-5 on the season. Her final line read seven innings, two hits, just one walk, and three strikeouts.

With Partain dealing, the Bulldog's offense just needed to string together a few hits to support her and it happened in the fourth inning as they scratched across their lone run of the game. Shaw led off with a double, followed by a Katie Campell single. Grier Bruce was able to drive Shaw home on a sacrifice fly as the Dogs took a 1-0 advantage that Partain was able to make stick.

The Warhawks got a runner to second base only once for the game, in the second inning with two outs but Partain got out of it to hold on to the one-run lead. Shaw was the bright spot offensively in the Samford lineup in the game as she went 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of doubles.

The Bulldogs are back in action tomorrow as they North Alabama and ULM. They face the Lions at 1:30 p.m. and then the Warhawks at 4 p.m.
