CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Samford softball team finished play this weekend in Southern Conference play at Chattanooga. The Bulldogs were unable to avoid a series sweep against the now first-place Mocs as Samford fell 5-1 in the series finale. The Bulldogs fall to 30-21 overall and 11-7 in SoCon play after the defeat this afternoon.
Samford gave the ball to
Jordyn Partain for the second time this weekend. The Bulldog ace was dealing in the opening game of the series before the Mocs rallied late against the senior hurler. Today, the home side got to Partain in the second inning as she surrendered a solo homer which put Chattanooga up 1-0. The Bulldogs went to the bullpen in the fourth as Partain's day ended after three innings pitched and just the one run allowed.
The Bulldog bats were held hitless through five innings as
Olivia Shaw was the lone player to reach base on a walk and a hit-by pitch. Chattanooga was the team that got the big rally as they scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning off
Sara Bond in her second inning of work. The Mocs loaded the bases with a walk and two singles before a wild pitch allowed a run followed by the biggest hit of the game, a three-run homer which put the home side up 5-0.
Ella Nelson and
Joi Hubbard each singled to start the top of the sixth inning in hopes of a rally. Shaw drove a ball to the wall in center field but the Mocs made a catch while crashing into the wall to limit the damage to a sacrifice fly as the Dogs managed just one run as they fell 5-1.
Chattanooga outhit Samford 8-2 in the game as nine Bulldog batters struck out in the game. The loss went to Partain after she allowed the opening run of the game as her record fell to 13-13 on the season.Â
The Bulldogs remain in third place in the conference, tied with Wofford. The Bulldogs and the Terriers meet next weekend in Birmingham for a three-game set as Samford will honor their senior class. The series is scheduled for two games on Friday and the finale on Saturday.
