BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's tennis team will travel to Columbia, S.C., to take on the Florida State Seminoles in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, it was announced Monday evening.
The match will take place on Friday, May 2, the time of the contest has not been announced yet. The Samford men's tennis team watched the NCAA Tournament Selection Show in the Coca-Cola Hospitality Suite in the Pete Hanna Center. Head Coach
Oliver Reynolds said it was a special experience to see his team's name come up on the bracket.
"It's a pretty surreal feeling to be able to watch that, obviously, at a place like Samford," Reynolds said. "I'm excited for our program and excited for this school. It's just another opportunity for all of our guys. We've had some great years recently and just to be able to get over that finish line this year and be able to get past that final hump is an important part for this team."
Samford enters the NCAA Tournament with a record of 19-5 overall and 6-1 in the Southern Conference. The Bulldogs won a share of the SoCon regular season title and then pushed their ticket to the NCAA Tournament by winning the SoCon Tournament with a dramatic 4-3 win over Furman last Sunday. This marks Samford's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2013.
"It was a great feeling to see our name pop up and for them to talk about our school on the big screen," junior
Sandeep Mohandoss said. "It's obviously a season to remember so far, but we still have things to give next week."
Florida State has a mark of 18-8 overall and 9-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Seminoles fell in the second round of the ACC Tournament, 4-3 to eighth-ranked Stanford.
Samford and Florida State have met four times, with FSU holding a 4-0 series lead. The teams most recently met in 2022, with the Seminoles earning a 4-0 win in a tournament in Tallahassee, Fla. The teams previously met in the NCAA Tournament in 2008, with FSU winning, 4-0, also in Tallahassee.
