BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford softball team was home this weekend for its season finale series against Wofford. The Bulldogs honored six seniors prior to the game yesterday but it was postponed due to weather and continued today. Samford was able to pull out the 4-3 victory to finish their regular season with a 31-21 record overall and a 12-7 mark in Southern Conference play.
Play resumed today with two runners on and no one out in the bottom of the first inning. The Bulldogs loaded the bases before
McKayla Cothran scored on an error on a
Katie Campbell ground ball but the Dogs somewhat squandered the opportunity as just one run scored in the inning.Â
Jordyn Partain got the start for Samford and cruised through the first two innings before the Terriers got to the senior hurler in the third inning. She surrendered a double that scored a run followed by a two-out, two-run homer but all of the runs were unearned as the Dogs committed an error in the inning.Â
It didn't take long for the Bulldogs to answer as
Grier Bruce plated
Olivia Shaw on a two-run homer that tied the game 3-3. Shaw was 1-for-1 at the plate with two walks, reaching safely in all three plate appearances. The homer for Bruce was her seventh of the season.
Olivia Treece came in relief momentarily in the fifth to relive Partain, but after three batters, the Samford starter went back in the circle and got out of the inning unharmed.
Linsey Hargis singled in the bottom of the sixth and
Ella Nelson drew a walk before Cothran delivered the biggest hit of the game as she put a single down the left-field line to score Hargis and give the Dogs a 4-3 lead. Partain shut the door in the seventh as she retired the side in order to earn the win for the Bulldogs as she took her season-long record to 14-13.
The Bulldogs outhit the Terriers 10-6 as Cothran and Hargis had two and three hits respectively. The plan was to play another game this afternoon, but due to weather, the game was canceled and just the one game was played. With the victory, the Bulldogs secured the third seed in the Southern Conference Tournament which begins next Wednesday.Â
