BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford football team held its second scrimmage of the preseason Friday morning at Pete Hanna Stadium and the defense turned in a strong performance as the Bulldogs continue their preparations for the upcoming season.
"I thought defensively we played exceptionally well," Samford head coach
Chris Hatcher said. "It was pretty much a defensive day, domination in a lot of aspects. Offensively, we missed some easy blitzes up front that we've got to be able to pick up. We missed some easy throws, had a lot of drops today offensively."
The defense produced six sacks in the scrimmage.
Jackson Bussey had three sacks, including a safety, in the scrimmage.
KeShawn Washington,
Conroy Cunningham II and
Russell Watts had one sack each.
William Pruitt had an interception for the lone turnover of the day.
The offense had some big plays as well. Returning starting quarterback
Quincy Crittendon threw three touchdown passes, including a 54-yard score to
Nicholas Bookman to cap a 95-yard scoring drive. Crittendon also threw touchdown passes to
Cam Bland for seven yards and to
Calvin Jones for 17 yards.
"We've had a good camp." Hatcher said. "We're excited about moving to the next phase of training."
The Bulldogs have scrimmaged each of the last two Fridays, with both the offense and defense showing bright spots. Hatcher talked about what he wants to see from his team as it progresses.
"I think offensively we've got to do a good job of just staying in front of people up front," Hatcher said. "We need better ball security on the perimeter. Defensively, I thought we took a step in the right direction on our tackling today. We've got to continue to improve in those fundamentals."
Hatcher talked a little about the team's schedule moving forward.
"We've got a few days next week to get better, start a little bit of preparation on our first opponent," Hatcher said. "Again, it is going to be more about us getting better fundamentally and technique-wise."
Samford will open the 2025 season by playing host to West Georgia on Thursday, Aug. 28, at 6:30 p.m. at Pete Hanna Stadium. Fans can find season tickets at the following link:
