With the loss, Samford fell to 0-3 on the season. Baylor improved to 2-1 with the win.
"Early on, we did an awesome job of coming back from the 14-point deficit to cut it to 14-7 with the ball inside the 10 and a chance tie the game," Samford head coach Chris Hatcher said. "Our guys played extremely hard. We didn't quit. In the second half, our goal was to win the second half, and we got beat 7-0 in the second half, so that speaks to the type of players that we have on our team."
True freshman wide receiver Torrey Ward caught his first collegiate touchdown pass in the game. He caught five passes for 62 yards and a touchdown. Quincy Crittendon completed 7-of-13 passes for 59 yards, while backup Brady Stober completed 4-of-10 passes for 30 yards. C.J. Evans rushed 13 times for 53 yards. Evans also threw the touchdown pass to Ward on a double pass.
For the Samford defense, Jaden Mosley had 12 tackles, including nine solo stops. Gumbo Gaskins and LaShon Young had an interception each for the Bulldog defense.
On Samford's first possession, Baylor's Placide Djungu-Sungu blocked a Samford punt and Bo Onu recovered it for the Bears at the Samford 28-yard line. With 9:37 left in the opening period, Sawyer Robinson hit Josh Cameron for a 10-yard touchdown to make the score 10-0.
Samford answered with an 80-yard drive, capped by a double-pass with running back Evans catching a pass from Crittendon and then hitting Ward for a 12-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 14-7 with 1:07 left in the first quarter. Robertson hit Kobe Prentice for a 12-yard touchdown to make the score 21-7 with 8:52 to go in the second quarter.
