BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford women's tennis picked up its first win of the spring season Friday afternoon, defeating Alabama State, 5-2, at the Samford Tennis Center. The Bulldogs improved to 1-1 on the season with the home victory, while the Hornets fell to 0-1.

Samford secured the doubles point behind two wins, the duo of Hailey Troup and Eleni Liakonis earned a 6-4 victory, while Laila Fishman and Cathy Cardona-Carbal cruised to a 6-1 win to give the Bulldogs an early 1–0 advantage.

In singles play, Samford captured four of six matches to clinch the contest. Lea Erenda opened singles action with a straight-sets win at the top spot, defeating Diana Craciun, 6–3, 7–5. Eleni Liakonis followed with a dominant 6–1, 6–2 victory extending the Bulldogs' lead.

Laila Fishman added another point for Samford with a 7–5, 6–3 win before Cathy Cardona-Carbal sealed the team victory with a 6–1, 6–3 decision over Jovana Petrovic.

Alabama State picked up its two points during the singles match, but Samford's depth proved to be the difference as the Bulldogs controlled the match from start to finish.

Samford will look to build momentum from the win as it continues non conference play in the coming weeks.
