BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Samford women's tennis team earned a hard fought 4-3 victory over West Alabama on Thursday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center, improving to 4-1 on the spring season.
The Bulldogs gained early momentum by securing the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. The duo of Hailey Troup and Eleni Liakonis battled to a 7–5 victory at doubles, while Laila Fishman and Cathy Cardona-Carbal followed with a convincing 6–2 win to give Samford a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
In singles competition, Samford delivered three key victories to clinch the match. Sara Erenda provided a steady performance at earning a 6-4, 6-2 win, while Liakonis added a strong straight-set victory, winning 7–6, 6–1. Cardona-Carbal secured the decisive point for the Bulldogs with a gritty 6–3, 7–5 win.
West Alabama pushed the Bulldogs throughout the afternoon, but Samford's depth and composure in key moments proved to be the difference in the tightly contested match up.
With the win, Samford continues to build momentum during the early portion of its spring schedule and will look to carry that confidence into its upcoming match at Jax State on Friday, February 13th with first serve scheduled at 1 p.m.
