ATLANTA, Ga.-The Samford men's tennis team built an early lead by clinching the doubles point Friday, but Georgia Tech swept five of six singles matches to earn a 5-1 victory in non-conference play at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex. The result moves the Bulldogs to 4-4 overall this spring.
Samford opened the match with impressive energy in doubles. The senior tandem of Sandeep Mohandoss and Darcy Nicholls rolled to a 6-1 win, while the pairing of Lukas Dvorak and Cooper Errey secured a 6-4 victory to clinch the doubles point for the Bulldogs. The remaining doubles contest was left unfinished with the teams even.
Momentum shifted in singles as Georgia Tech responded by winning five matches in straight sets. Darcy Nicholls and Sandeep Mohandoss each fell in two sets. Nationally ranked Jonathan Irwanto handed Sebastian Harrison a 6-4, 6-3 loss, while Santiago Arredondo narrowly dropped his opening set in a tiebreak before finishing 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
The lone singles victory for Samford came from Cooper Errey, who edged Owen DeMuth 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 to close the match on a high note for the Bulldogs.
Samford returns home for a doubleheader Sunday, Feb. 15, facing Southern Mississippi and Oglethorpe University at the Samford Tennis Center.
