Samford Softball Splits Opening Day at Bulldog Invitational

STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Samford softball team began play at the Bulldog Invitational hosted by Mississippi State today. Samford split their pair of games today, falling to the No. 14-ranked hosts 6-2 before bouncing back with the 1-0 walk-off win over Delaware State. The Bulldogs' record moves to 5-8 on the season.

Against Mississippi State, Samford wasted no time manufacturing offense. Brandy Phillips led off with a single and came around to score on an RBI hit by Olivia Shaw, giving the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead. The host Bulldogs quickly responded in the bottom of the first, plating three runs on back-to-back doubles.

In the fourth, Katie Campbell delivered the highlight for Samford, launching a solo home run off the scoreboard in left field to trim the deficit to 4-2. The homerun is already the sixth of the season for Campbell, tying her for eighth nationally. MSU added runs in the fifth and sixth as cushion, working against Brandy Phillips who went the distance for Samford, allowing 11 hits and six runs. Samford was held to just four hits while striking out nine times as a team offensively. After a big threat in the opening inning, scoring chances became hard to come by as they fell 6-2.

The nightcap against Delaware State was a pitcher's duel, with Makinly Turner dominating from the circle. Turner scattered three hits, struck out nine, and issued only one walk in a complete-game shutout. The Bulldogs showed patience at the plate, drawing five walks but stranding seven runners through the first six innings as they failed to generate anything offensively.

The breakthrough came in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the seventh. Addison Smith singled to center, followed by Ella Nelson's double to center, bringing Smith home with the game's only run and handing Samford a walk-off victory. The win snapped the Bulldogs' four-game skid and moved Turner's record to 3-2 on the season.

The Bulldogs are back in action for two games tomorrow as they face Belmont at 10 a.m. and then Delaware State again 5:30 p.m.
