EUGENE, Ore. - The Samford softball team competed in day two of the Oregon Classic today, as they played two more games. The Bulldogs got revenge on Idaho State with an 8-0 victory before falling to the hosts and No. 17 ranked Ducks 8-0. After the split, Samford's record moves to 7-12 on the season.
GAME ONE: Samford - 8 | Idaho State - 0
The Bulldogs faced the Bengals this morning after closing with a defeat to them last night. Samford was able to flip the script from yesterday's game as they gave the ball to
Makinley Turner. She delivered one of her best performances of the season as she limited ISU to just three hits while striking out a season-high 10 batters.Â
Turner got all the run support she needed in the second inning when
Ella Nelson hit a two-RBI double, ahead of
Olivia Shaw's single that scored two more runs and put the Dogs up 4-0. Shaw singled and drove in another run in the fourth, and
Katie Campbell's sacrifice fly scored
Brandy Phillips to make it a 6-0 game.
Kayden Harrison drove in a run with a single in the fifth, and
Addison Smith's sac fly ended the game in the sixth, giving the Dogs the 8-0 victory. Samford had 10 hits in the game, led by Shaw's three-hit effort and two hits from
Shannon Weems as Turner moved to 4-4 on the season.
GAME TWO: Oregon - 8 | Samford - 0
Samford turned their attention to the No. 17 ranked Ducks in the night game, their fourth ranked Power-Four opponent of the season already. Phillips got the ball in the circle and was strong the first time through the order, but Oregon tacked on a run in the third on a sac fly to go up 1-0.Â
The Ducks added on in the fourth when they had their big inning of the game and ran Phillips after she went three innings and was hit for four earned runs before being replaced by freshman
Reese Hickey, who surrendered a three-run homer. The Samford bats struggled to get much going as they tallied just three hits in the game against Oregon pitching.
Olivia Trout came in to pitch in the fifth inning, but she struggled with her command as she issued five walks and allowed three runs, which ended the night with an 8-0 defeat.
Shannon Weems reached base in both of her at-bats as she singled and was hit by a pitch.
The Bulldogs close out the tournament tomorrow as they face Oregon again at 2:30 p.m.
