Softball Falls Against Iowa To Close Weekend

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Samford softball team wrapped up play this morning at the JoAnne Graf Classic as they played their fifth game of the opening weekend. The Bulldogs faced off with Iowa for the second straight game, falling to the Hawkeyes 3-2 after taking an early lead. Samford's record falls to 1-4 on the season with the defeat.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a lead after scoring the opening run in the second inning of the game. Brandy Phillips led off the inning with a single and was moved to third when Brooke Wildes doubled to left field. Phillips would come in to score on a Shannon Weems sacrifice fly and give the Dogs a 1-0 lead.

The Hawkeyes struck back in the bottom of the second against Samford pitcher Makinley Turner. After striking out the first two batters of the inning, Turner issued back-to-back, two out, walks which she was punished for when she surrendered her first hit of the game which drove in a run and tied the game.

Katie Campbell put the Bulldogs back ahead in the fourth as she hit her second homer of the season to left field and chased Iowa's starting pitcher in the process. The big blow against Turner game in the bottom of the fifth as she gave up a leadoff double, followed by a one-out, two-run blast, but put Iowa back up 3-2.

Now trailing, the Bulldogs were unable to muster any rally in the sixth or seventh innings as they went down in order. Turner falls to 1-1 in the circle on the season after going six innings, allowing five hits, three runs, and striking out four batters. Five different Dogs had a hit in the game, with Campbell's homer, Wildes' double, and Sydnie Ferrant's triple accounting for the extra base hits.

The Bulldogs return to Birmingham for their home opener against Alabama State on Tuesday. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m. against a Hornets side that is 1-1 on the season and plays four more games before Tuesday's matchup with the Bulldogs.
