Samford Bats Blanked By Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - The Samford softball team played its second game in as many days as they traveled to face Jacksonville State this afternoon. Both pitching staffs limited the opposing batters as the teams combined for just eight hits, but the Gamecocks defeated the Bulldogs 4-0. Samford's record falls to 9-19 after the defeat.

Olivia Treece got the ball for the Bulldogs as she made her sixth start of the season. She issued a two-out walk and then was punished as the next batter hit a home run down the left field line that was contested by Samford players on the field and head coach Megan Curry. Ruled fair, the Bulldogs went down 2-0 before JSU doubled their lead in the bottom of the second as Treece surrendered two walks and two hits to go up 4-0.

Brandy Phillips came in relief for Samford and shut down the home side's bats as she went the rest of the way, 4.1 innings pitched, and allowed just one hit. The Bulldogs totaled four hits for the game, and their biggest threat came in the sixth inning as Olivia Shaw and Katie Campbell delivered one-out singles. However, the pair was stranded as the Dogs left eight on base in the game. In the seventh, Addison Smith led off with a walk and Katie Hart delivered her second hit of the game but once again the top of the order failed to come up with the big hit to drive home Samford baseruners.

The Bulldogs get a well-deserved break after playing eight games in the past week. They return home for just their seventh home game of the season as they host Troy on March 17. The Trojans have a 16-7 record on the season and have a series with South Alabama before facing the Bulldogs.
