Bulldog Bats Come Alive in 13-0 Win At Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Samford softball team was back out on the road for a midweek game at Alabama State tonight. The Bulldog bats were too much for the Hornets' pitching as Samford exploded for a 13-0 road win over ASU. Samford captures its third-straight win and takes their record to 12-21 on the year after a season sweep over Alabama State.

The Bulldogs got things going right away, as Joi Hubbard set the table all night at the top of the order. She singled and scored on a two-run Katie Campbell double, which was followed by a two-run Brandy Phillips homerun that put the Bulldogs up 4-0.

Reese Hickey got the ball to start for the Dogs, and she delivered with her best outing of her freshman campaign. She held the home side scoreless as she scattered six hits and struck out six batters over six innings of work,  as she took her record to 2-0 on the year.

Samford added on another run in the fourth when Hubbard singled to bring home Sydnie Ferrant to make it a 5-0 game. The dam broke for ASU in the sixth, as the Samford offense exploded for eight hits and eight runs. Nearly all of the damage was done with two outs, as Olivia Shaw had an RBI double and later scored on a two-RBI single from Campbell. Shannon Weems drove in two with a single to make it 10-0 Samford before Brooke Wildes dealt the final blow with a three-run homer. Hickey forced the Hornets to leave the bases loaded in the sixth as Samford captured the 13-0 win after six innings.

After a series win at Mercer, the Dogs continue to swing hot bats, as they combined for 12 hits, five of which went for extra bases. Hubbard led the way with three hits, while Campbell and Wildes had two hits each and led the Dogs with three RBIs apiece.

The Bulldogs return home for a Southern Conference series this weekend against Chattanooga. The Dogs are 2-1 in league play while the Mocs enter 1-2 after a series against Wofford.
