Samford Women's Tennis Narrowly Falls at Wofford in SoCon Road Match

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Samford women's tennis team dropped a tightly contested 4-3 match at Wofford on Saturday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center, suffering its first Southern Conference loss of the season. The setback snaps a three-match winning streak for the Bulldogs, who now stand at 10-7 overall and 2-1 in SoCon play after the road defeat.

Samford started strong securing the doubles point, claiming a 2-1 edge over Wofford in doubles play. The pairing of Hailey Troup and Eleni Liakonis delivered a 6-3 victory in the first match completed. Cathy Cardona-Carballosa and Laila Fishman earned a 7-5 win, before Sara Erenda and Lea Erenda fell in a tiebreak, still giving the Bulldogs the early 1-0 advantage.

Wofford's momentum came in singles play, winning four matches to secure the overall victory. The Bulldogs' lone singles points came at the bottom of the lineup, with Cardona-Carballosa prevailing in three sets and Troup battling for a three-set win. Both matches showcased resilience, as Cardona-Carballosa and Troup each rallied to win deciding sets and keep Samford within striking distance.

However, straight-set defeats for Sara Erenda, Lea Erenda, Eleni Liakonis, and Laila Fishman, allowed Wofford to clinch the match 4-3. The day's play lasted three hours and 24 minutes in cool, breezy conditions.

With the result, Samford's conference record moves to 2-1 and the Bulldogs will look to regroup quickly as the SoCon schedule continues.

Samford will travel to Greenville, S.C. to face Furman on Sunday, March 29 at 11 a.m. in another crucial Southern Conference road match.
