BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -The Samford softball team finished off a Southern Conference sweep of Chattanooga at home today. The Bulldogs led wire-to-wire as they captured a 10-4 victory, their sixth straight win overall. Samford's record moves to 15-21 and 5-1 in SoCon play after the series sweep.
The Bulldogs wasted no time asserting control in the opening innings. In the bottom of the first, starting pitcher and two-way threat
Brandy Phillips launched a two-run home run to left field, putting the Bulldogs on top early. The offense kept rolling in the second as
Addison Smith scored on a wild pitch and
Olivia Shaw delivered an RBI triple, bringing in
Joi Hubbard to extend Samford's lead to 4-0.
Chattanooga chipped away with a run in the third, but Samford answered back. Shaw added a two-run double to center field in the fourth, scoring Hubbard and Smith for a 6-1 cushion. Phillips continued her impact with a triple, and Smith finished the day 2-for-3 with two runs scored. There were Bulldogs all over the bases all day as they had 13 hits, five for extra bases.
A Mocs rally made it 7-4 in the sixth,
Katie Campbell delivered the decisive blow—a three-run home run to right, scoring Shaw and
Katie Hart and sealing the 10-4 win. Phillips, Campbell, and Shaw each drove in at least two runs, with Shaw leading all hitters at 3-for-4 with a triple, a double, and three RBI. Campbell hit four long balls during the series, and moves back into the conference lead with 14 on the season.
The pitching staff combined for a strong outing, allowing just five hits and two earned runs. Phillips started and struck out three over 5.2 innings, before
Sara Bond and
Makinley Turner closed out the final 1.1 frames without allowing a hit.
The Bulldogs will look to keep their winning ways alive as they head to face UAB on Tuesday night, before they return to SoCon play with a series at Wofford. The Blazers enter with a 15-21 record while Wofford sits at 24-8.
