Bulldogs Fall In Extra Innings Against New Mexico

MOBILE, Ala. - The Samford softball team finished play at the Jaguar Classic today with a game against New Mexico. The Bulldogs went to extra innings with the Lobos, and their 8th-inning rally came up just one hit short as they fell 4-3. Samford's record drops to 9-17 on the season.

Samford defeated the Lobos 8-2 on Friday to open their Jaguar Classic, and they faced them again today to finish off their tournament. UNM opened the scoring with a solo homer in the first, but the Dogs answered in the home half of the inning when Olivia Shaw singled with two outs, stole second, and scored on Katie Campbell's double.

After two early runs, the pitchers from each side took control of the game. Olivia Treece settled in for Samford, holding the Lobos hitless from the second inning through the seventh. The Bulldog bats were able to gather 10 hits for the game, but they left eight runners on base and struck out 13 times as the game went to extra innings tied 1-1.

After a stellar outing from Treece, New Mexico got to the Bulldog's starter in the eighth. They homered twice in the inning to go up 4-1 in the top half of the frame. Down, the Dogs responded with their back against the wall as Brendy Phillips led off with a single and Campbell left the yard for the eighth time this season, making the game 4-3. Shannon Weems and Brantley Drake singled with two outs and ended up on second and third, but the rally came up short as Addison Smith grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.

Phillips, Campbell, and Drake all had multi-hit games and Campbell accounted for all three RBIs in the game for the Bulldogs. Treece's record moves to 1-2 after a strong outing where she went eight innings, allowing four hits and runs.

The Bulldogs continue one of the toughest schedules in the country as they head to take on Alabama on Tuesday night. The Crimson Tide are 22-0 on the year and ranked sixth in the country.
