Bulldogs Roll to Sixth-Straight Win Over West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Samford softball team erupted for 16 hits and five home runs to power past West Georgia for a 14-6 road victory Tuesday. The win extends the Bulldogs' season-long winning streak to six games and improves their overall record to 23-26.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run home run by Brandy Phillips that scored Olivia Shaw. West Georgia responded by scoring one run in the bottom of the first and rallied in the second against Samford starter Olivia Treece. They three in the second to take a 4-2 advantage before freshman pitcher Reese Hickey entered in relief in the second inning and stabilized the game for Samford.

Samford's offense answered immediately in the top of the third. A solo home run from Katie Campbell and a second homer from Phillips tied the game at 4-4. Campbell's homer set the Samford single-season record with her 16th on the year. Later in the inning, Addison Smith delivered an RBI single to score Ella Nelson, giving the Bulldogs a 5-4 lead they would not surrender. Shaw added an insurance run with a solo homer in the fourth.

The game broke open in the sixth inning when Nelson launched a grand slam to extend the lead to 10-4, scoring Phillips, Kathryn Bryars, and Shaw. The Bulldogs tacked on four more runs in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run single from Nelson and RBIs from Sydnie Ferrant and Brooke Wildes. Hickey was dominant in relief, tossing 4.2 innings while allowing just one run, issuing no walks and striking out seven.

The Dogs had 16 hits in the game, led by four hit performances from Phillips and Nelson. Nelson led the way with 6 RBIs while Phillips had three. Shaw and Campbell continue to be premier bats in the SoCon, as they each had three hits on the afternoon.

The Bulldogs remain hot and will ride their win streak back into Southern Conference play at ETSU this weekend. The teams will play two games on Saturday, followed by one on Sunday. The Bucs enter with a 17-24 record.
