Game Recap: Softball |

Bulldogs Take First Two Games of Series Against Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Samford softball team was back on the road in Southern Conference play today as they started a three-game set at Wofford. The Bulldogs shutout the Terriers for the first time all season, and did it twice, as they won game one 4-0, followed by a 7-0 win in game two. Samford stays hot in the SoCon as they move to 7-1 in league play and 17-22 overall.

GAME ONE: Samford - 4 | Wofford - 0

The Bulldogs started the series by handing the ball to Sara Bond, who was stellar for Samford. The Dogs gave her a cushion with run support in the second inning as Katie Hart singled up the middle to score Brooke Wildes. Joi Hubbard followed up with a double to left field that scored Shannon Weems and Hart as the Bulldogs went up 3-0.

Bond scattered five hits over her seven innings of work as she struck out three Wofford batters. Really her only trouble was in the sixth inning as the home side had runners on the corners with one out, but she induced a double play to get out of the jam unharmed. Brandy Phillips added one more run for the Bulldogs as she hit a solo homer to center field, her eighth home run of the season, to make it 4-0. The Bulldogs had seven hits in game one as they came up with big hits to take down the Terriers.

GAME TWO: Samford - 7 | Wofford - 0

The Bulldogs carried that momentum into the second game, scoring early and often. Olivia Shaw started a two-run first inning with an RBI triple and scored on a single from Phillips. Samford broke the game open with a two-run third and a three-run fifth. Ella Nelson was the offensive star, driving in four runs with a two-run double in the third and a two-run triple in the fifth. Weems brought home Nelson on a ground ball, which finished the Samford scoring in the fifth and made it 7-0.

Phillips got the ball in the circle for Samford and shut down the home side, as she limited the Terriers to just two hits in the game. Phillips went all seven innings and struck out three batters as she moves to 4-5 on the year. Across 14 innings of work, Samford's pitching staff did not allow a single run and surrendered only seven total hits. The Bulldogs' defense was also flawless, committing zero errors in the doubleheader sweep.

The final game of the series is set for an 11 a.m. first pitch. There will be no live stream, but live stats can be followed with the link here.
