SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Samford softball team finished up a series this morning at Wofford in Southern Conference play. After taking the first two games yesterday, the Bulldogs fell in extra innings today, 3-2 in the eighth frame. The Bulldogs fall to 17-23 overall and 7-2 in SoCon play after taking two of three against the Terriers.
Both teams settled in for a pitching duel early, with
Reese Hickey holding Wofford hitless through the first five innings, running her scoreless streak to 20 innings. Samford took the lead in the third when
Joi Hubbard reached base, stole second, and scored on a wild pitch, staking the Bulldogs to a 1-0 advantage.
Samford's offense continued to put runners aboard but struggled to capitalize, going just 1-for-9 with runners on base and leaving six stranded. The Bulldogs' defense remained sharp, committing zero errors and turning aside several Wofford threats. Wofford broke through in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run to tie the game on their first hit of that day against Hickey.
In the seventh, Samford took the lead as
Ella Nelson scored on a clutch RBI double by
Brooke Wildes. However, Wofford answered in the home half of the inning as they loaded the bases, chasing the Samford starter and scored one run as
Sara Bond came in relief. The Bulldogs threatened in the eighth but were held scoreless as the Terriers walked off in the bottom of the frame against
Makinley Turner.Â
The Dogs remain in second place in the SoCon after taking two of three in the series. They sit at 7-2, behind UNCG who has yet to drop a SoCon game. The Bulldogs head to Ole Miss on Tuesday for a midweek against a Rebels side that is 25-15 on the year. They return home over the weekend for a conference series against Western Carolina.
