Mack Helms

Mack Helms begins his second season as an assistant coach for the Samford football team. He assists with the team’s offensive line, working specifically with the tackles.

During the 2021 spring season, Samford’s offensive line produced a pair of All-SoCon honorees in Gavin Orr and Mike Williams. The unit also helped running back Jay Stanton rank fifth in the SoCon in rushing.

Helms came to Samford after serving as an offensive analyst at UNC Charlotte during the 2019 season. He worked specifically with the offensive line, and assisted with all phases of special teams. Helms helped the 49ers to the program’s first bowl appearance and highest win total during the 2019 season.

Helms was part of an offensive staff that improved the team’s rushing and passing attacks by more than 2,500 yards in the same season. The team’s offense went from worst in Conference USA in 2018 to first in the league the following year.

Prior to going to UNC Charlotte, Helms served as an offensive graduate assistant at Tulane and East Carolina. He assisted with both the offensive line and tight ends at both stops.

During his time at Tulane, Helms helped lead the Green Wave to their first American Athletic Conference (AAC) Co-Division title. The team also earned the program’s first bowl win in over 20 years.

Helms also worked with the 2014 East Carolina offense that ranked first in the AAC in passing offense, total offense and first downs. The offensive line he worked with helped quarterback Shane Carden to back-to-back 4,000-yard passing seasons.

Helms earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from East Carolina in 2014. He then earned a master’s degree in homeland security studies from Tulane in 2018.
