Caroline Powell, a team captain on Samford's squad a year ago, is in her first season as a student assistant coach for the Bulldogs. She has already played a vital role on the team this year and has greatly helped Samford's new assistant coaches make the transition to the squad.
As a player in 2006, Powell was classified by head coach Beanie Ketcham as the "glue of the team". She is a natural leader and has been a true mentor for the Bulldogs' players this season.
Powell played in 23 games as a senior and 21 games as a junior for the Bulldogs. She competed in two seasons at Samford after transferring from Palm Beach Community College. Powell signed with PBCC directly out of high school and led the Panthers to the Florida Junior College State Tournament.
As a prep athlete, she attended Person High School in Semora, N.C., and was named the school's Softball Player of the Year in 2002. Powell also earned all-conference honors in both 2001 and 2002.
