Lexie Higgins is entering her second season as an assistant coach, after previously serving as a volunteer assistant during the 2019 season. Higgins’ primary coaching responsibilities include defense and baserunning.
Â
“Lexie played almost every position for me during her four-year career at Samford,” said head coach Mandy Burford-Johnson. “She is comfortable coaching the infielders, outfielders, and catchers. She also fully understands what it means to coach at Samford University and be a student-athlete here, and is able to relate to our current athletes while also being able to help recruit potential student-athletes to Samford. She is heavily involved in our recruiting process.”
Â
Higgins excelled defensively during her four-year playing career at Samford. After limited playing time as a freshman in 2015, she became a staple of Burford-Johnson’s lineups for the next three seasons, starting 174 of a possible 178 contests.Â
Â
In 2016, Higgins was the only Bulldog to start all 60 games, helping to lead Samford to SoCon regular season and tournament titles, as well as an NCAA Regional berth. With nine home runs and 37 runs batted in, she earned a second team All-SoCon selection.
Â
As a senior in 2018, Higgins led the team in home runs (9) and slugging percentage (.496). She also ranked second in OPS (.850), runs batted in (27), and total bases (69).

Higgins, a native of Oxford, Alabama, prepped at Oxford High School where she also competed on the volleyball and basketball teams.
