Shawn Gregory begins his third season
as a member of the Samford football
staff. In his first season, Gregory
coached wide receivers. He began coaching
quarterbacks in 2005.
He came to Birmingham from
Mississippi Valley State, where he had
worked since February 2002. While at
MVSU, Gregory was the offensive coordinator,
and quarterbacks and receivers coach.
In his first season coaching the Delta Devil
offense, the team posted a 5-6 record after
going 0-11 the year before.
He worked with the San Diego Chargers
during the summer of 2004 and 2005 alongside
NFL Hall of Famer James Lofton. In the
summer of 2006, he worked with the Tampa
Bay Buccaneers.
Gregory was receivers coach and head
baseball coach at Tuskegee University from
July 2000 to January 2002. Both of his teams
at Tuskegee won the Pioneer Bowl, and the
2000 team won the Black College National
Championship with a record of 12-0. The
2001 team finished second for the
championship, posting a record of 11-1.
For the 1998 and 1999 seasons, Gregory
coached at Morris Brown. In 1998, he
coached the quarterbacks and tight ends
before serving as the offensive coordinator
and quarterbacks and receivers coach in 1999.
In his first year at Morris Brown, the team
finished 3-8. It jumped to a 6-5 record in his
second season at the school.
Gregory is a 1996 graduate of Jackson
State University with a degree in health,
physical education and recreation.
Gregory is married to the former Denise
Jones. He has a son, Shawn, Jr. (15), and a
daughter, Shawnise Elon (1).
