Samford Men's Hoops Clipped By Undefeated Panthers, 64-50

ATLANTA (AP) - Kevin Morris scored 15 points with 5-of-8 first-half shooting from 3-point range to lead Georgia State to a 64-50 victory over Samford in the Panthers' Trans America Athletic Conference opener Monday night.

Georgia State coach Lefty Driesell's team increased its regular-season winning streak to 12 games, dating back to last season. It was Driesell's 739th career victory, most among active coaches. Fresno State's Jerry Tarkanian is next with 737 wins.

Georgia State (6-0) used a suffocating defense to hold a fourth team this season to 54 points or less by making 10 steals, forcing 16 turnovers, blocking four shots and holding the 3-point shooting Bulldogs (1-4, 1-1 TAAC) to 4-of-26 from outside the arc.

The Panthers opened a 10-0 lead, including two 3-point jumpers by Morris, and never trailed. Samford made a run at the end of the half and closed the the lead to five (32-27) before Donnie Davis drilled a 3-pointer to forge an eight-point GSU lead.

Marc Salyers led Samford with 21 points.
