Bulldog Women Win Second Straight Over JU

Jan. 11, 2001

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford senior Cortney Moore recorded her first double-double of the season to help the Samford Bulldogs to their second-straight Trans America Athletic Conference victory over Jacksonville University, 52-47, Thursday night at Seibert Hall.

Moore notched a season-high 12 points and pulled down a season best 16 rebounds for the Bulldogs who owned a 49-38 edge on the boards but its was free throw shooting down the stretch that propelled Samford to the win to improve to 4-10 overall and 3-2 in the TAAC. Jacksonville drops to 4-9, 0-4 TAAC.

Samford went 9-9 from the free throw line in the final 5:59 of the game after shooting just 8-19 from the charity stripe until that point. The Bulldogs finished 17-28 for 60.7 percent. Giovanni Price scored seven of her 13 points from the line and Aimee Cochran, who also finished with 13 points, nailed the final two-free throws of the game with 11 seconds remaining to give Samford it final margin of victory.

Jacksonville was led by Kat Sungy who scored 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Angela Walker was the only other Dolphin in double-figures with 12 points. JU shot just 31 percent (19-61) from the floor and 50 percent (6-12) from the free throw line.

"I am thrilled to get a win," said Samford head coach Janet Cone. "It was not pretty but our defense was good, we rebounded well, and we cut down on our turnovers. Free throw shooting was critical, we didn't shoot the ball that well all night but we made the free throws when we had to."

Jacksonville opened the game on a 15-8 run in the first five minutes but the Dolphins would only score two points over the next seven minutes as Samford took a 19-17 lead with 6:45 to play in the first half. The game would be tied at 21 at the 5:25 mark before Samford went on a 7-2 run to take a 28-23 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Samford would lead by as many as eight points at 33-25 but JU battled back to tie the game at 41-41 with 6:14 left to play. The Bulldogs then went on a 7-1 run to take a 48-42 lead with 35 seconds to play. JU's Lexie Richards hit a three-pointer to bring the lead to three points but Samford made all of its foul shots down the stretch to secure the victory.

Samford will return to action against Stetson on Saturday. The Bulldogs and Hatters will tip off at approximately 4:15 p.m. The game is the second game of a double header with the Samford men taking on Troy State at 2 p.m.
