JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (AP) - Forward Marc Salyers hit 9-of-12 shots from the
field and scored 22 points to lead Samford to a 61-53 win over Jacksonville
State Saturday afternoon.
Salyers left the game in the first half when he came down on a Gamecock player's foot and turned his ankle, but returned to help the Bulldogs remain in first place in the Trans America Athletic Conference with his efficient 75 percent shooting. Samford (11-8, 8-2 TAAC) hit 58 percent of its shots from the field, while
Jacksonville State shot only 30 percent. The Gamecocks (6-13, 3-7) were
particularly cold in the first half, hitting only 25 percent as Samford took a
27-19 halftime lead.
With Derrick Jones out of the game three minutes into the second half with his fourth personal foul and a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct,Cornell Felton and Chris Weaver combined for some big shots in the second half to make up for the loss of Jones' scoring. Felton added a career-high 15 points for the Bulldogs, and Chris Weaver had 12.
Mike McDaniel had 14 points for the Gamecocks and Brant Harriman had 9
rebounds.
