Bulldogs fall to FAU, 2-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - - BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Florida Atlantic used goals from sophomore forward Lauren Lucena and freshman forward Brandi Herrmann as the Lady Owls defeated Samford, 2-1 in a key Atlantic Sun conference game. Samford and FAU are now tied in the conference at 3-2-1.

The Lady Owls opened up the scoring in the 16th minute. Samford goalkeeper Carrie Ollom deflected sophomore forward Lauren Lucena's shot. Lucena got the ball right back and fired a shot into the net to give FAU a 1-0 lead, which held up until halftime.

FAU scored the first goal in the second period. Janine Aylward sent a corner kick into the box. The kick was knocked down and Brandi Herrmann knocked it into the net to give the Lady Owls a 2-0 lead.

Samford battled back and cut the FAU lead in half. Freshman defender Lindsay Bosshardt found Lindsay Shanks at the top of the box. Shanks passed back to freshman midfielder Keala Ryan who launched a shot from 20 yards over the head of FAU goalkeeper Molly Keating to bring Samford within, 2-1.

The Lady Owls kept Samford from scoring in the final 21 minutes to hang on for the win. It was Ryan's first career goal for the Bulldogs and Shanks fifth assist of the season.

The Bulldogs will be in action at 1 p.m. Saturday when they host UCF. FAU travels to take on Jacksonville State.
