CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Russell Kelly shot 71 on Tuesday to claim the individual title and the Samford men's golf team claimed its second consecutive team championship at the Precept Intercollegiate hosted by Austin Peay State University.
The win is Samford's second in as many weeks and Kelly's first Top 20 finish this fall. Two other Bulldogs finished in the tournament Top 20, as first-round leader Seth Mobley shot a two-round 149 to finish in a tie for third and Bradley Farmer in a tie for 17th with a 155. Mobley recorded his second consecutive Top-5 finish, and Farmer also recorded his third Top-20 finish in four tournaments as a true freshman.
Kelly's 71 was the only under-par round fired in the two-day event.
Andy McRae placed just out of the Top 20 at 22nd with a 158. Mike Clements followed McRae with a 159 to finish tied for 26th.
"At this point we wish we had another tournament or two to play this semester," said Samford Assistant Coach Ian Thompson. "We played another solid round and I think the key for us was our ability to navigate the fast, tricky greens."
The Bulldogs began the day in second place, four strokes behind host Austin Peay State, but overcame tricky greens and a host of quality competition to shoot 605, their best two-round score of the fall season. Kelly began the day in sixth position, three strokes behind the leader and teammate Seth Mobley.
The final team results were as follows:
Samford (305)
Austin Peay State (609)
Xavier (610)
Tennessee Tech (619)
IU-Purdue U.-Indy (622)
Murray State (631)
Mercer (632)
Bradley (642)
Dayton (643)
