DELAND, Fla.- Sebastian Singletary scored 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Santos Hampton scored 18 points as Stetson defeated Samford 74-59 in Trans America Athletic Conference basketball Saturday.
For the second consecutive game, Samford (12-11, 9-5) was outplayed in the second half, losing an eight-point halftime lead in the first three minutes of the second half. Stetson (15-8, 10-5) opened the second half with a 12-5 run and scored 48 second-half points, the most surrendered in a half by Samford this season. The Hatters shot 51 percent from the field in the second half to Samford's 33, and forced the Bulldogs into 17 turnovers and 14 percent from three-point range in the second half. In the Hatters' big second half Hampton scored 11, Will Robertson added 13 and Singletary scored 11. Stetson also outrebounded Samford 39-32. Marc Salyers scored 22 for Samford and Derrick Jones added 17 for the Bulldogs.
Stetson jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and led for the first eight minutes of the game before a basket by Salyers tied the game at 12-12. The Bulldogs pulled away from Stetson with a 9-2 run to lead 21-14 midway through the first period. Samford led the rest of the first half and achieved its largest lead, 32-24, on a three-pointer by Jones with 2:13 left in the half. Stetson cut into the deficit with a basket by Vann Morris with 1:08 left, and Samford took a 34-26 lead into the half.
The Hatters opened the second half with high energy, taking the ball inside and converting on three-point plays the old fashioned way with Santos Hampton and Sebastian Singletary. As the game grew to be more physical, Hampton dominated inside, scoring 11 second-half points while Singletary added 9. A layup by Robertson with 2:16 gave the Hatters their largest lead of the game, 63-53.
Corey Green scored seven points, Sebastian Sachse scored six. Chris Weaver added five and Gabe Skypala scored two points for the Bulldogs.
Samford returns to action at home next week, hosting UCF on Feb. 15 and Florida Atlantic on Feb. 17.
