Feb. 15, 2001

Box Score

DELAND, Fla. - The story remains the same for the Samford women's basketball team, slow first halves in fourth-straight games have led to a four-game losing streak. The Bulldogs could not overcome another slow start on Thursday as the Stetson Hatters took a 61-46 Trans America Athletic Conference game at the Edmonds Center.

Samford (5-17, 4-9 TAAC) fell behind 26-7 twelve minutes into the game and never recovered as The Hatters shot 48 percent in the first half to only 29 percent for Samford. The Bulldogs were held scoreless for six minutes in the opening period after a three-pointer by Aimee Cochran made the score 11-7. The Hatters ensuing 15-0 run put Stetson out of reach for the Bulldogs.

Stetson (18-5, 10-4) snapped a two-game losing streak with the victory and remain in third place in the TAAC. Cher Dyson scored 12 of her game-high 19 points in the first half and Eboni Long added 13 points and nine rebounds for the Hatters who out rebounded the Bulldogs 23-12 in the first period to take a 34-19 lead into the locker room.

For the fourth-straight game, Samford played even with its opponent in the second half. The Bulldogs were led by Wendi Wilcox who scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds. The Bulldogs took the edge in rebounding in the second period by out-boarding the Hatters 30-16. The Bulldogs defense stiffened holding Stetson to 42 percent shooting in the second stanza.

Samford went on an 11-0 run mid-way through the second half to cut a 56-32 deficit to 56-43 with 3:23 left to play. The Bulldogs would get as close as 12 points at 58-46 with 1:27 but a three pointer by Stetson's Satu Raimesalo would provide the final margin of victory.

Thursday marked the first time Stetson had beaten Samford at the Edmonds Center. The Bulldogs had been 2-0 in DeLand going into the night. Samford will try to bounce back against Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Fla. on Saturday in a 2 p.m. game.
