Women's Basketball Falls at Jacksonville, 60-54

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Giovanni Price had a game-high 13 points and Wendi Wilcox scored 11, but it was not enough as the Samford University women's basketball team fell to TAAC rival Jacksonville University, 60-54, Saturday afternoon in Swisher Gymnasium.

The Dolphin defense held Samford to 30.2 percent shooting from the field, and JU connected on 66.7 percent of its shots in the second half en route to the win. With the loss, Samford fell to 5-18 on the year and 4-10 in TAAC play. JU, meanwhile, improved to 13-11 overall and 9-7 in league action.

Natalie McLendon led the club with eight rebounds while Cortney Moore and Aimee Cochran each tallied six. Reserves Jennifer Lutrell and Suzette Pittman both came off the bench to score eight points in the loss.

Samford drew first blood when Price hit a layup 57 seconds into the game to give the Bulldogs the early lead, but JU responded with a 9-2 run to take a five-point lead less than five minutes into the game. The Bulldogs tied the game two possessions later and jumped out to a nine-point lead at the 6:58 mark with the score at 20-11 in favor of the visiting team.

But JU rattled off a 14-2 run to take a 25-22 lead with 2:54 left to play in the first half. It was a back-and-forth battle the rest of the period, and the two clubs went into the lockerroom at halftime deadlocked at 27-27.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the second half on a jumper by Wendi Wilcox 2:58 into the stanza, but once again, the Dolphins responded with a 10-3 run to take a five-point advantage less than five minutes later. Samford cut the lead to a single point on two occasions, but the Dolphins would not back down. Leading 39-38 at the 7:53 mark, JU went on a 11-2 run to all but wrap up the game.

Samford cut the lead to two on a 3-poiner by Sara Clement with 27 seconds to go to make the score 56-54, but Shannon Wynn and Yolisha Jackson both sunk a pair of free throws to ice the game for the Dolphins.

Milica Miljkovic and Yolisha Jackson led JU in scoring with 10 points a piece, and Angela Walker led the way with eight rebounds and a career-high eight assists.

The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday, Feb. 22 when they play host to TAAC rival Mercer at 7 p.m.
