JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Shawn Platts and Brandon Williams each scored 19 points and Jacksonville outscored Samford 44-22 in the second half as the Dolphins defeated Samford 74-51 in Trans America Athletic Conference action Thursday.
Jacksonville (15-7, 9-5) shot 50 percent from the field against the nation's 17-ranked defense, a defense that had not allowed a team to shoot 50 percent the entire season. Rather it was the JU defense that held Samford (12-10, 9-4) to 39 percent shooting and forced the Bulldogs into 19 turnovers, one shy of the Samford season high for the year. Samford trailed 30-29 at the half, but poor offensive execution and good defense by JU propelled the Dolphins on a 24-10 run that gave them a 52-42 lead midway through the second period. JU reached its largest lead, 74-49, with 21:16 left in the game on a layup by Antwan Robertson. Chris Weaver led the Bulldogs with 14 points, followed by Derrick Jones with 12 and Marc Salyers with 10.
"We seemed a step slow all night," said Samford Head Coach Jimmy Tillette. "I told the team that they would have to play with more energy than we played with against Campbell last Saturday, but they didn't. You have to credit Jacksonville with their energy and intensity throughout the entire game."
The Dolphins jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first half and shot 46 percent from the field, but Samford used its three-point shooting to come back. Samford led by as many as seven but did not score in the last four minutes of the half and trailed 30-29 at the half. The loss was Samford's worst loss and the third lowest point total of the season.
Samford continues on its Florida road trip when the Bulldogs face Stetson at 6 p.m. (CDT) on Sat., Feb. 10.
