RECORDS FALL IN OPENING ROUND OF TAAC MEN'S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

April 23, 2001

DADEVILLE, Ala. - Jacksonville University's Ben Lockwood fired a seven-under-par 65 in the first round of the Trans America Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship, setting a new amateur record on the Tradition Course of the StillWaters Resort.

Lockwood's 65 ties the record for best opening round, also accomplished by Henrik Sevegran (GSU) in last year's championship, and ranks in a tie for second in all-time single rounds.

Lockwood's mark wasn't the only record to fall, however, as Georgia State shot an eight-under-par 280 as a team, setting the best opening round score in TAAC history and the fourth-best single day score. The Panthers' score betters the 281 set by the Hal Sutton-led Centenary Gents in 1979.

Eight players fired under-par rounds and two shot even-par. UCF (291) and Jacksonville (295) finished second and third behind Georgia State. Samford finished seventh with a total of 309, led by rounds of 76 from Charlie Gibson and Mike Clements.

Russell Kelly (77), Andy McRae (80) and Seth Mobley (85) rounded out the Bulldog roster.
