Aug. 2, 2001

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford University's head women's basketball coach Janet Cone has announced the hiring of Annette Alston to fill the assistant coaching position left by Sue Harris over the summer.

Alston is a 1990 graduate of Francis Marion University where she was a member of the FMU's 1985-86 NAIA National Championship team. After her college playing days, Alston played professionally in Oslo, Norway for two seasons before returning to begin her coaching career.

She spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Coastal Carolina University, one year at Charleston Southern University and has spent the last three seasons as an assistant at the University of North Alabama. Alston's responsibilities will be recruiting and defensive strategy for the Bulldogs.

"Annette brings a plethora of experience to our staff," said Cone. "She has played for a National Champion, she has played professionally, and she has ten years worth of coaching experience. She fits in very well with Samford's mission and she is a strong recruiter."
