Memphis Sweeps Bulldogs

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Memphis remained undefeated by sweeping Samford University 30-28, 30-25, and 30-21 in volleyball action at Seibert Hall Thursday night.

The Tigers (9-0) were led by Ginger Garrett who recorded a double-double with 17 kills and 12 digs. Adrianne Edmonds posted 16 kills and 13 digs. Shella Neba added 10 kills for the Tigers.

Samford (2-8) was led by senior Whitney Miller who recorded her third double-double of the season with 11 kills and 11 digs. Miller now has 998 kills for her career and is fourth on Samford's all-time list. Shellie Ouldhouse and Abby Miner each had seven kills for the Bulldogs. Ouldhouse added 12 digs and Krista Kettering added 10 digs to go with her 34 assists.

The Bulldogs came out strong in game one jumping out to a 9-5 lead and forcing Memphis to use an early timeout. The Tigers eventually tied the game at 22 before using a 4-0 run to take a 27-22 lead. The Tigers had three game points leading 29-25, but Samford battled back to 29-28 before Edmonds tipped over the Bulldogs block for the 30-28 win.

Samford hit .306 in the opening game while Memphis hit .271 but it was the Tigers side out game that eventually won it in the end.

The second game was another tight one as both teams battled back and forth to 10-10. Samford gained a small advantage building a 17-15 lead, but the Tigers bounced back and used 5-0 run to take a 20-17 lead. Memphis used a 3-0 run at 24-21 to gain a 27-21 lead and then were able to side out for the 30-25 win.

Memphis was able to control the final game using a 10-4 run to break open a 6-6 game. Trailing 16-10, the Bulldogs could not get closer than six points and dropped the finale 30-21. The Tigers hit .305 for the match while holding Samford to a .154 percentage. Memphis out-dug Samford 66-54. The Bulldogs held a 6-4 advantage in blocks.

Samford will get a couple of days off before returning to action on Tuesday at Birmingham-Southern. Memphis will open up its Conference USA schedule tomorrow night at UAB.
