Finals Set at Bulldog Open

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford freshman Jennifer Pharr reached the finals of flight three with a 3-6, 7-5, 10-8 victory over Tennessee-Martin's Pamesh Gayatri on the second day of the 2001 Bulldog Open at Samford on Saturday.

Pharr is the only Bulldog to reach finals Sunday although five Samford players dropped semi-final matches. Pharr's opponent on Sunday morning will be Tori Malone who defeated Samford's Brooke Bryant 6-4, 7-6. Bryant had defeated Christy Favre 6-2, 6-2 to reach the semi final round.

On the men's side , Samford's Rahael Bohli and David Misner each dropped semi-final matches in the top flight. Bohli defeated UAB's Tobias Klein but fell to Jonas Jarvholm of Shorter College. Misner downed Birmingham-Southern's Nils Hanchen 7-6, 6-2 before falling to UAB's Andre Van Der Merwe. Jarvholm and Van Der Merwe will meet in the top flight final Sunday morning.

Independant Ricardo Nishimura will meet Shorter's Federico Rodrigues in the flight two finals while Shorter's Camilo Ramirez will face teammate Juan Pablo Selle in the flight three final. Selle defeated Samford's Andres Leal 6-0, 6-7, 10-4 to advance to the final. Leal had beaten Lipscomb's Zack Bowman earlier in the day.

The top women's flight final will feature UT-Martin's Martha Montano and teammate Elly Sherman. Sherman defeated Samford's Emily Nunnally in the the semi's 6-4, 6-2. The second flight final will be between Masuyui Yamamoto and Karta Azuara of UT-Martin. In the fourth flight Birmingham-Southern's Timmis defeated Samford's Natalya Spicker 6-4, 6-7, 10-8 to advance to the final against Xavier's Lang.
