Jan. 22, 2002

Macon, Ga. - Samford senior Chris Weaver was named the Atlantic Sun Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Week by the league office on Tuesday afternoon after leading the Bulldogs to two straight conference wins as Samford remains in first place in the A-Sun standings. Weaver averaged 20 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game last week as Samford posted wins over conference foes Campbell and Georgia State.

Weaver, a senior guard from Arab, Ala., proved to be at his best in the second half last week as he shot a combined 11-15 (73.3%) from the floor and 7-11 (63.6%) from long range. Against Campbell, Weaver scored 22 points with five boards, including 19 second-half points. Against Georgia State, Weaver added 18 points and eight rebounds as the Bulldogs rallied from 13 points down in the second half to capture the win. Weaver once again sparkled in the second half as he shot 5-6 (83.3%) from the floor and 2-3 (66.7%) from three-point range.

For the week, Weaver shot 60.9 (14-23) percent from the field, and 56.3 (9-16) percent from three-point range while grabbing 13 rebounds and recording three steals.

Weaver leads the Bulldogs in scoring as he is currently averaging 14.0 points per game with 4.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists.

The Bulldogs (11-7, 8-2 A-Sun) remain in a first place tie with Jacksonville in the Atlantic Sun standings but recorded a win earlier this season at Jacksonville to hold the tiebreaker. Just one game separates the top four teams in the league as teams look toward the Atlantic Sun Championship which will be held on February 28-March 2 in Orlando, Fla., on the campus of UCF. The tournament champion will receive the league's automatic bid to participate in the NCAA Tournament.
