Samford travels to Richmond, Ky. to take part in the four-team Eastern Kentucky Comfort Suites Classic Dec. 29-30. The Bulldogs will play the host team Eastern Kentucky at 3 p.m. (CST) Sunday and Morehead State Monday at 1 p.m. Both games cane be heard via the internet at www.samfordsports.com.
Kristal Hood scored 13 second half points and UNC-Asheville held off a late Samford rally to defeat the Bulldogs 62-56 at the Justice Center on Dec. 19. Samford fell to 2-6 while UNCA improved to 3-5. Lindsey Harris scored 14 points to lead Samford while Noot Pittman and Chelsee Insell each added 12 points. UNCA had four players finish in double figures. Tonisha Jackson scored 17 points while Lindsey Roche added 14 points and Shantell Waiters scored 11 points. UNCA shot 67 percent from the field in the second half. Samford trailed 58-56 with 36 seconds left, but the Bulldogs missed a jumper inside the lane. Shantell Waiters made one free throw with 10 seconds to give UNCA a 59-56 lead with 10 seconds.
The Lady Colonels won the UAB Lady Blazer Classic last weekend. EKU defeated Grambling State, 87-82, and Troy State, 82-71. Junior guard Katie Kelly was named the tournament MVP and the Ohio Valley Player of the Week. Three players are averaging in double figures for the Lady Colonels: Kelly (16.4 ppg), Pam Garrett (11.9 ppg) and Teresa McNair (11.5 ppg).
Samford and Eastern Kentucky meet for the first time ever Sunday. Both teams will hav e to get used to seeing one another as Samford begins play in the OVC next season.
The Bulldogs continue play in Eastern Kentucky Comfort Suites ClassicMonday. Samford will play another future OVC opponent, Morehead State, at 2 p.m. (EST).
