Feb. 12, 2002
TUCSON, Az.- Samford junior right-handed pitcher Frank Allen Yeilding was named a "Louisville Slugger" National Player of the Week by the Collegiate Baseball newspaper.
The honor is Yeilding's second in two days, as he was also named the Atlantic Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
Yeilding was impressive in his first appearance as a Division I pitcher, tossing a seven-inning, no-hit shutout for a 2-0 win over VMI on Feb. 9. It was also his first career start at Samford. Samford swept the three-game series with the Keydets to open the 2002 season.
A native of Birmingham, Ala., and a Mountain Brook High School graduate, Yeilding struck out 10 of the 23 batters he faced while walking just two. The no-hitter was the first for the Bulldogs in Head Coach Tim Parenton's five-year tenure at Samford. The sweep also gave Parenton his first ever 3-0 start.
Prior to joining the Bulldogs, Yeilding led Central Alabama Community College to the Junior College World Series in 2001.
