Giovanni Price led four Samford players in double figures with a game-high 18 points and Noot Pittman hit a pair of free throws with 19 seconds remaining as the Samford Bulldogs ended a 17-game losing streak with a 67-63 victory over Stetson in Atlantic Sun women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Seibert Hall.
Stetson (9-11, 8-5 A-Sun) led 61-59 after a basket by Ja'net Smith with 3:10 to play in the game. Samford's Jennifer East hit a three-point shot with the shot clock winding down with 1:13 remaining to put Samford on top 62-61. East finished the game with 12 points. The Bulldogs would increase the lead to three points on a lay-up by Morgan Vickery who had 11 points. Pittman was fouled scrambling for a loose ball with 19 seconds remaining. Stetson called a timeout to ice Pittman, but the junior calmly made both shots to put the game out of reach. LaBrena Friend then stole the in-bounds pass and converted a lay up to give her 11 points on the day. Stetson's Kaisa Tuure made a shot as time expired to give her 12 points for the Hatters.
Samford (2-18, 1-12 A-Sun) began the game making three of its first four three-point shots and opened up a 10-7 lead. The Bulldogs had a 10-2 advantage in points off turnovers in the first half and out rebounded Stetson 24-17. Pittman had all nine of her rebounds in the first half. Samford had its largest halftime lead of the season at 35-26.
Stetson stormed back in the second half using a 13-4 run to tie the game at 39 at the 15:41 mark. The Hatters would lead by as many as seven points with 11:25 to play. Samford then used a 8-2 run to pull the score to 50-49 at the 8:22 mark. Samford out scored Stetson 5-2 in the last 73 seconds. Tashean Thomas led Stetson with 13 points. Amy White had 12 points and Kristy Brown finished with 10 points.
The Bulldogs forced Stetson into 23 turnovers, 13 in the second half and out rebounded the Hatters 38-33. Stetson out shot Samford in the game making 46 percent from the floor, 29 percent from three-point range, and 80 percent from the free throw line. Samford went to the line 10 more times than the Hatters and made seven more free throws.
Samford will go for two in a row as it hosts Jacksonville on Monday night at Seibert Hall. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
