Bulldogs Travel To Jacksonville State For Key Double Header

The Atlantic Sun Conference softball season has two weeks to play and as teams battle for the top six tournament positions Samford and Jacksonville State meet today at University Field in Jacksonville for a 4 p.m. double header.

The Bulldogs (19-25, 4-10) are currently tied with Campbell for seventh place in the league. Georgia State, Samford's next opponent, currently holds the sixth and final tournament spot with a 5-7 conference record.

Samford just wrapped an eight-game home stand were it went 4-4. Deanna Resmondo was the Bulldogs leading hitter on the home stand with a .333 average. Amber Fuller went 3-1 in the circle and batted .304. The Bulldogs have had trouble scoring runs all season in their four losses, Samford was shut out in all four games. The Bulldogs have a 19-13 record this season in games that they score at least one run. In games were the Bulldogs score three runs or more they are 16-5.

Janet Middleton continues to lead the Bulldogs in hitting with a .366 overall average, Angela Bednark is batting .306 with eight home runs and 26 RBI. She is one home run and three RBI from setting single-season records in those categories.

Jacksonville State (31-10, 8-4) currently holds the number three seed and is only one game behind second place Stetson. The Gamecocks have won three of their last four after splitting a pair of one-run games at Georgia State on Tuesday. JSU has played eight extra inning games this season and have a 6-2 record in those games.

Offensively, Renee Hasen who is batting .336 with nine doubles, a triple, three home runs, and 16 RBI lead the Gamecocks. Breanna Olson leads the club with seven home runs and 25 RBI. JSU has hit 27 home runs this season and has a team batting average of .259.

Samford is 10-16 all-time against Jacksonville State. The Bulldogs took two of four last season as the Gamecocks won 1-0 in an early season tournament. The two teams split a double header in Birmingham and the Bulldogs took the opening game of the TAAC Tournament 3-0 as Brianne Mertens no-hit the Gamecocks. The last time the two teams met in Jacksonville, JSU swept a pair of one run games 3-2 and 1-0.
