Samford seniors Janet Middleton, Mindy Shunnarah, Michelle Dickey, and Rebekah Phillips will play the final home games of their careers this afternoon as the Bulldogs host Georgia Tech at 4 p.m. at Bulldog Field in the final home games of the season.
This senior class was won 88 games over the last four years the most ever by a group of Samford seniors. They will be honored in a pre-game ceremony to begin around 3:45 this afternoon.
As far as the games, it is a renewal of the oldest rivalry in each teams history. The two teams have met every year since they both began their programs in 1987. Tech has beaten Samford more than any other opponent but also lost to Samford more than any opponent other than Virginia. Samford has more wins against Tech than any opponent other than Mercer. The two teams have met 63 times with Tech holding a 39-24 advantage in the series. The Jackets have won the last four meetings since Samford took three out of four from Tech during the 1999 season.
The Bulldogs enter today's action with a 20-28 overall record. Samford will not qualify for the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament for the first time since 1998 after losing a pair of one-run games at Georgia State on Monday. Shunnarah went 4-7 in the two games while Deanna Resmondo went 3-7 with her first home run of the season. Resmondo is nine for her last 24 (.375) with three doubles and a HR. She hit a team-high .303 against conference opponents and is now third on the team with a .280 overall average. Dana Saffles had a pair of hits against GSU and is three for her last 12.
The Yellow Jackets (41-15) ended a four-game losing streak by sweeping Jacksonville State 8-3 and 4-2 on Saturday. Georgia Tech is 7-2 against teams from the Atlantic Sun this season with four of those wins coming against JSU. The Yellow Jackets swept Georgia State, split with Troy State and lost a single-game to FAU.
