Owen and Evans lead Gray team to 5-2 win in Baseball Fall Game

Sept. 22, 2002

Heath Owen and Sae Evans each hit home runs to lead the Gray team past the White team, 5-2 in Samford's fall game Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field during family weekend. The game was the culmination of three weeks of fall practice for the Bulldogs.

"I thought it was a great day. Our players played hard. The heat really got to them. It was really hot out there, but the guys did a great job," Samford head baseball coach Tim Parenton said.

Owen led off the game with a solo home run to right field to put the Gray team ahead, 1-0. After singles by freshman Jeff Dils and junior Joe Denson, Sae Evans smashed a three-run home run over the left field wall putting the Gray on top 4-0.

The White team cut into the lead 4-2, but the Gray added an insurance run to make for the final margin.

"I'm really proud of all of them. We had to put pitchers in position spots just to put nine out on the field. Everybody did what they were supposed to. All of our players have stepped up this fall and gotten it done," Parenton said. "I think we have a good solid foundation going into the spring. All of our parents had a good time. That's what Samford baseball is all about."

The Bulldogs will begin spring practice in early January. Samford's first game of the 2003 season will be at home against VMI Feb 7. The Bulldogs will host the Keydets in a three-game series at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
