The Samford Bulldogs are one of just 14 undefeated teams in the nation. The Bulldogs will put that streak on the line Wednesday when they travel to Gardner-Webb for an Atlantic Sun Conference battle of Bulldogs.
Freshman Marian Wagner's has scored in three-straight games for Samford. Her goal in the 68th minute helped Samford remain undefeated earning a 1-1 tie against Georgia State on Saturday. The Bulldogs scored four goals last week with Wagner accounting for three of them. The 'Dogs have scored in all nine matches this season and are riding a school-record nine match unbeaten streak. Samford's next win will equal its school record win total of nine set in 1999 when the Bulldogs went 9-8-2
Gardner-Webb is 4-4 overall and 2-1 in its first season in the Atlantic Sun. GWU is coming off a 3-0 win at Stetson. Elizabeth Kier, Michelle Vandervaart, and Kim O'Brien each scored unassisted goals in the win. GWU lost to Jacksonville 3-1 and defeated Troy State 1-0 in A-Sun play. The Bulldogs have scored 25 goals in eight matches, 14 of them were in a 14-0 victory over South Carolina State.
Samford sophomore Lindsay Shanks scored seven goals in five matches but has now gone three matches without a goal. Her next goal will tie her with Hayley Kolb and Lindsay Anglin for second on the all-time list. She is two goals shy of the single-season record that she tied last season.
The Bulldogs are 13th in the nation in goals against only allowing five goals in their first nine matches. The Bulldogs have pitched four shutouts. Goalkeeper Crystal Royall is 18th in the country allowing 0.54 goals per game.
Wednesday's match up marks the first time Samford and Gardner-Webb have met in soccer. Kickoff is 2 p.m. EST in Boiling Springs, N.C.
