SAMFORD: New Orleans native Jimmy Tillette takes his Bulldogs to New Orleans for the second time in his head coaching career. Samford is 1-1 on the season coming off a 94-61 thumping of NAIA Bryan College. The Privateers are 1-0 after defeating Texas State 77-64 last Saturday.
Eddie Harper and Phillip Ramelli have combined for 40 percent of Samford's offense in its first two games. The tandem is responsible for 42 percent of the team's rebounds. Ramelli just missed his third career double-double as he had nine rebounds on Tuesday night. He is the only Bulldog player to record a double-double in the last three years. Anthony LoPiano and Jerry Smith combined for 15 assists, each posting career bests, and just two turnovers in the win over Bryan on Tuesday. As a team, The Bulldogs had 28 assists on 32 made baskets.
NEW ORLEANS: The Privateers return three starters off last year's 15-14 team. UNO defeated Texas State 77-64 in its home opener last Saturday. Bo McCalebb and Kyle Buggs each scored 17 points in the victory while A.J. Meredith added 13 points and seven assists. The Privateers shot 48 percent from the floor and 40 percent from three-point range against Texas State.
HISTORY: Saturday's meeting is the 10th all-time between Samford and UNO. The Privateers have won the last nine including a 56-51 victory in the last meeting on Dec. 19, 1997. Samford won the first meeting in Birmingham 100-90 on Feb. 12, 1970. Since then six of the last nine meetings have been in New Orleans with UNO winning them all. The two teams have met just twice since 1990.
NEXT: Samford will continue its four-game road trip by competing in the Brothers Air & Heat Shootout hosted by Winthrop University in Rock Hill. S.C. nest Friday and Saturday. The 'Dogs will face the tournament host on Friday at 7 p.m. and face either Southern Miss or Hampton on Saturday.
