Samford Holds Nutrition Seminar For Student-Athletes

Nov. 4, 2003

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Over 70 student-athletes from Samford University attended a seminar on nutrition as part of Samford's NCAA CHAMPS / Life Skills Program Monday night.

The program was led by Dr. Bonnie Spear, Associate Professor at UAB. Dr. Spear addressed both hydration and nutrition issues for athletes, providing accurate information about protein and carbohydrate intake as well as sharing insight about the true value of supplements.

Student-athletes learned some of the needs that are different for each sport, natural sources to replace expensive dietary supplements and discussed some of the myths surrounding dietary supplements.

"Dr. Spear presented useful and practical information to help student -athletes make wise choices. I really got a lot out of her presentation," Emily Nunnally, a senior on the tennis team said.

The nutrition seminar was part of the Samford Athletics 2003-2004 CHAMPS / Life Skills Program sponsored by State Farm Insurance. Previous seminars include an orientation to Samford and "Media Manners" hosted by Mike Raita of ABC 33/40. Spring seminars include: Writing a Resume, Choosing a Career and Real World Finances.
