TIP OFF: Samford (3-4) looks to win two games in a row for the first time this season as the Bulldogs welcome former assistant coach Lance Richardson and his Covenant College (5-9) team to Seibert Hall on Saturday. Richardson, a Samford graduate, was a Bulldog assistant from 1997-2000. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. and can be heard in Birmingham on WVSU 91.1 FM or seen worldwide on Bulldog Vision at samfordsports.com.
SAMFORD: Samford has played just two home games this season, but the Bulldogs have enjoyed shooting the ball at Seibert Hall. In two games this season the Dogs are shooting 61 percent from the floor (65-107), 51 percent from three-point range (24-47), and 93 percent (25-27) from the free throw line. The Dogs are averaging 89.5 points per game and have won by 34 points per game at Seibert.
The Bulldogs had plenty of season highs in their 85-50 victory over Tennessee-Temple on Thursday. Samford shot 69 percent from the floor while Tyson Dorsey and Jerry Smith each had season high's in points. Dorsey added a career high in assists while Smith had a career high in rebounds. Phillip Ramelli tied his season high for points and Eddie Harper had a career in rebounds. Greg Zimny posted his first career assist and the Bulldogs also had a season-high 14 steals against the Crusaders.
COVENANT: The Scots have dropped their last two outings against Union College and Tennessee-Temple. Jonathan McClellan leads the team averaging 13.1 points per game while Nate Beers is scoring 11.8 points per game. The Scots' version of the Princeton Offense is scoring 60 points per game and shooting 43 percent from the floor and 33 percent from three-point range.
SERIES HISTORY: Samford leads the all-time series against Covenant 2-0. Both previous meetings were in Birmingham with the last coming on Jan. 26, 1987. The Bulldogs won that meeting 97-84. The first meeting between the two came in 1964 when the Bulldogs posted their largest win in school history with a 118-48 victory over the Scots.
UP NEXT: Samford travels to the Pyramid in Memphis to face John Calipari and the Memphis Tigers on Monday in a 7 p.m. game. The Bulldogs are 1-2 all-time against the Tigers.
