Women's Basketball Heads to Troy State

Samford wraps up Atlantic Sun cross-divisional play Saturday when the Bulldogs travel to Troy State for a 2 p.m. tip-off in women's basketball action. The Bulldogs (5-16, 1-9 A-Sun)) look to win their second conference game of the season, before returning to Northern Divisional play next week. Samford will be facing the A-Sun's top shooter in TSU's Thea Herring. Herring leads the conference shooting 59 percent from the field.

Lindsey Harris scored a career-high 19 points, but it wasn't enough as Mercer defeated Samford, 85-57, in Atlantic Sun Women's Basketball action at Porter Gym Thursday afternoon. Karen Hickman and April Dyer each scored 16 points to lead four Lady Bears in double figures. The Bulldogs fell to 5-16 and 1-9 in the Atlantic Sun. Samford shot a season-high 75 percent from 3-point range in the second half. Harris was 5-of-7 from the behind the arc. Mercer finished the game shooting 60 percent while the Bulldogs only shot 36 percent. Samford committed 22 turnovers. Mercer held the advantage on the boards, 31-28. Mercer held a 43-17 halftime lead, but only outscored the Bulldogs, 42-40 in the second half. Chelsee Insell scored all 11 of her points in the half. Giovanni Price finished with 12 points.

The Lady Trojans (12-9, 7-3 A-Sun) continue to stay in the race for the A-Sun South title despite losing to Belmont, Thursday at home, 67-58. Troy State is currently tied for third place with Mercer. Against Belmont, Chaquita Alexander scored 17 points while Constance Kelly added 13 points. Belmont outscored Troy State, 45-34, in the second half. Alexander ranks second in the conference averaging right at 17 points per game. The Trojans are third in the conference in scoring defense holding opponents to 61 points per game.

Samford and Troy State meet for the 12th time with TSU leading the series 8-3. The Lady Trojans swept last season's series winning, 74-58, in Birmingham and 62-57 in Troy.

Samford returns to A-Sun North Divisional play at home next week. The Bulldogs will host Gardner-Webb at 5:30 p.m. next Thursday in the first game of a doubleheader with the men's team. Samford will host Campbell next Saturday for Senior Day.
