BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Lindsey Harris and Chelsee Insell each scored 17 points to lead four Samford players in double figures and Samford shot 57 percent from the field as the Bulldogs defeated Gardner-Webb, 73-64, in Atlantic Sun Women's Basketball action at Seibert Hall Thursday evening. The Bulldogs improved to 6-17 and 2-10 in the A-Sun while Gardner-Webb fell 3-20 and 2-10 in the A-Sun.
With only seven players dressed, Samford managed to put four players in double figures led by Insell and Harris. Noot Pittman added 14 points and Cora Beth Smith chipped in 10 points. Brooke Wilkinson scored a game-high and career-high 21 points for Gardner-Webb. Wilkinson was 8-fo-16 from field including 5-11 from 3-point range. Casey Collins added 18 points and Shameka Smith grabbed her fourth double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds for Gardner-Webb.
Samford shot 60 percent from the field in the second half. The Bulldogs went 10-for-20 from 3-point range in the game. Gardner-Webb finished the game shooting just 42 percent from the field and 33 percent from 3-point range.
Samford led just 37-36 at halftime behind Insell's 12 points. Insell went 4-of-7 from behind the arc for the Bulldogs. Wilkinson had 11 points in the first half for Gardner-Webb. After Gardner-Webb scored the first basket of the game, Samford outscored the Runnin' Bulldogs 22-17. Five of Samford's first seven shots were 3-pointers.
Gardner-Webb came within 34-30 on two made free throws by Collins with 1:42 left before halftime. Wilkinson made a 3-pointer with 23 seconds left pulling GWU within 37-36 at the half.
Wilkinson hit another 3-pointer at the start of the second half to give Gardner-Webb its first lead since the start of the game at 39-37. After Insell answered with a 3-pointer, Collins hit a 3-pointer giving the Runnin' Bulldogs a 42-40 advantage with 17:21 left. Pittman and Natalie McLendon each made one free throw to tie the game at 42 with 14:17. Samford then went on a 14-1 run over the next nine minutes. Harris made a lay-up capping off the run and giving the Bulldogs a 56-43 lead with 8:15 left.
Gardner-Webb got within 66-59 on a lay-up by Collins with 1:38 remaining, but that was as close as the Runnin' Bulldogs would get.
McLendon grabbed a season-high seven rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Samford wraps up its regular season home schedule Saturday when the Bulldogs host Campbell on Senior Day at 4:45 p.m. Gardner-Webb travels to Belmont Saturday at 2 p.m.
